Cranes

Today we were in our garden when we heard a loud trumpet-like sound. We looked up and there they were. More than thousand cranes in differend groups. Some groups were onyl fifty, others more than two hundred. If you click on the image you can see them better. They were high above our heads.



Not sure if the sound plays, it does on my phone.

Oh wow - so many all at once! I've only ever seen them alone or in pairs.

I couldn't really hear them in the first vid, but they were clear in the second one. How brilliant!

We can only see them in November when they going on holiday in the south. *g* They came from three directions and it was stunning.

That's a funny thing with the sound. It is clear on my phone, but I have difficulties to hear it on my PC too. And I hoped that in one of them the sound could be heard. Great it worked with the second.

Yes, they are building up to groups with over thousands of them. Two years ago my father and I saw a very big gathering of them and afterwards we heard on the radio that there were more than 12000 cranes resting near Cologne (which isn't to fare away from my hometown).

But I think the one you see on the neighbour's roof is a stork. Cranes normaly don't stand on roofs like the stork does.

Has a Stork got very long legs? This one had and all the other birds were trying to dive bomb it but it wasn't bothered. Here in the UK, especially in places like Brighton on the coast, it's Starlings we see, flying around together in a kind of swarm, completely in coordination, turning and changing direction as one, it's amazing.

I'll answer to all your comments in one answer.

Yes, they all have long legs.

The legs of a stork are red except in hot summers when he shits on them to cool his blood.

Herons live near water, because the eat fish and other animals which live in the water. They hatch in bigger colonies in trees.

Cranes normaly live in Skandinavia or Finnland, so maybe you see them when they fly through.

So I think it really might be a stork, which is great because we don't have storks here.

Oh, I never saw them in spring. And I'm so happy we could see them today. All in all it must have been up to one thousand and my brother-in-law told us that there were much more around his home.

A long time ago we had a Starling and his family in a house nearby. Sadly he's gone. I love it when they fly all together as if they have a choreography only they do know. Happy you.

Oh yes, I remember the 27th of February(my father's birthday) in 2019, when we could sit outside in the sun and watch them come back. :-)

Yes, they are wonderful. We had some years when non flew over our town so we are very happy that they returned.

Yes, it really was a spectacle. We see them every year, but only in November. I never see them coming back.
