F is for Fire Held High and Away by Miriam Heddy
The story starts with the description of the runner who's carrying the Olympic torch and how he holds it so that he doesn't burn himself. After that, we start in 1981 with our lads.
The story is written in 1st person POV, which normally isn't my cup of tea. But the author did a very good job here. After the description of the bloke carrying the Olympic torch we are back in 1981 and Bodie, who is the storyteller, remembers the day when Ann Holly left Doyle standing in CI5's car park. And that he wonders, that Doyle never cried over her.
The next section starts some years later and the lads are over 40 and off the street. Doyle is Cowley's right hand and Bodie took Macklin's place as the instructor. But like every other agent of CI5, they have to move house. Again. And one day, Doyle just told Bodie that Cowley'll take a holiday in Scottland, Doyle tells Bodie that he'll ask Cowley for a two-bedroom flat. Because then Cowley would have to move them both at the same time and maybe they'll be lucky and moving into the two-bedroom flat would be the last house-moving they have to do.
To their surprise, Cowley is okay with the idea and they move together into the flat. And then, one evening, a drunken Doyle tries to seduce Bodie.
I was pleasantly surprised by the story because (like I said before) I normally don't like 1st person's POV. But she wrote it in a very good way. And I like it that we don't have the long-time lovers who move together but mates and working partners moving into one flat. And then, very late, they become lovers. And at the end, even Bodie isn't afraid of burning himself anymore. If you never read this story before I would say "give it a go and try it". This story is worth the time you need for reading.
